SUMMARY:Spring Author Series: J. Ryan Stradal
DESCRIPTION:Wrapping up the series will be J. Ryan Stradal\, who will speak about his book The Lager Queen of Minnesota\, a novel of family\, Midwestern values\, hard work\, fate\, and the secrets of making world-class beer. The Minneapolis StarTribune wrote about the book\, “The ending is surprising and understated\, which is how we do things in Minnesota. Everything about this book satisfies — from how the characters grow to how beer-making is described to Stradal’s hilarious assessment of lagers vs. IPAs. You may never drink a beer in ignorance again.” Stradal’s event will take place at Waseca Public Library on Tuesday\, March 29th at 7 pm.\n\nThis series is free and open to the public. Stradal will be signing books at the event.\n\nThis series is made possible by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and is funded in part with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Real People\, Real History: Book Banning
DESCRIPTION:Kim Hyun Sook started college in 1983 during South Korea’s Fifth Republic\, a military regime that entrenched its power through censorship\, torture\, and the murder of protestors. With fellow students disappearing for hours and returning with bruises\, Hyun Sook sought refuge in the comfort of books. In Banned Book Club\, Hyun Sook shares a dramatic true story of political division\, fear-mongering\, anti-intellectualism\, the death of democratic institutions\, and the relentless rebellion of reading. \nVirtual Event      Registration Closed. \nAmerican Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. \n

SUMMARY:Real People\, Real History: Censorship
DESCRIPTION:Author Louise S. Robbins will share the story of Ruth W. Brown\, a librarian in Oklahoma\, who\, in 1950\, was dismissed from her job after thirty years of exemplary service\, because she had allegedly circulated subversive materials. In truth\, however\, Brown was fired because she had become active in promoting racial equality. Relevant today\, Ruth Brown’s story helps us understand the matrix of personal\, community\, state\, and national forces that can lead to censorship\, intolerance\, and the suppression of individual rights. \nAmerican Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. \n
